StartCom’s StartSSL experienced a rather serious a security incident last week, targeting the company’s certificate authority system. StartSSL certificates are trusted by various browsers [Mozilla’s Firefox, Microsoft Corporation’s [NasdaqGS: MSFT] Internet Explorer, Google Inc.’s [NasdaqGS: GOOG] Chrome, Apple Inc.’s (NasdaqGS: AAPL) Safari] attesting to the authenticity of specific, enrolled sites. Reportedly, according to confidential sources in contact with Infosecurity.US, this incident is similar to the modus operandi leading to the recent Islamic Republic of Iran-sourced Comodo successful attack.
